5th Scouts make Daily Gleaner with Conservation Project

After a year of cutting back brush, picking up trash and doing research to write new interpretive signs, the 5th Fredericton Scouts, Ventures and Rovers gathered Saturday to officially reopen the Corbett Brook Trail.

About 30 youths took part in the project, the largest group made up of Scouts between the ages of 11-14.

Troop scouter Ken McDonald said the trail was brought to his attention by Lars Woodhouse, a Rover who recommended the group take on the maintenance of

the trail as an environmental project.

"He brought the idea to the troop, asking if we'd like to reopen the trail," McDonald said. "There were a couple other options, but our youths said, 'Let's work on Corbett Brook Trail and get it rejuvenated, cleaned up (and) get all the garbage out.' "

Located just off Wilsey Road in the Vanier Industrial Park, the trail was cut by the Fredericton Area Watersheds Association in 2004. But over the years, the 450-metre trail has become overgrown, making it dangerous to travel upon.

Woodhouse said the idea to suggest working on the trail came from a discussion with members of the Conservation Council of New Brunswick.

"They gave me a few ideas we could run with, and the Scouts decided out of those options to choose this trail," he said.

"The Fredericton Area Watersheds Association did a great job putting out the initial trail, but they needed someone to take it on from there."

After the troop decided to take on the trail project, Woodhouse applied for and received a $2,500 Environmental Scout Initiatives grant from Loblaw.

Then, with support from the City of Fredericton, the Fredericton Trails Coalition, local environmental groups and NB Liquor, which owns the land the trail runs through, the group got to work.

Woodhouse said one of the first steps in the process was to take a walk with Jim Goltz, a local veterinarian and nature enthusiast, to learn more about the trail and come up with ideas for their signs.

The next step was to clear away brush and get rid of all the garbage.

"We pulled a lot of trash out," Woodhouse said. "Like bicycles and lawnmowers and all sorts of things that just end up in the trails that don't belong there. The kids had a great time. They got to use hatchets and axes and whatever they needed."

Thomas MacGregor, one of the Scouts, said working on the project was fun and educational.

"One of our Scouters had an unexpected encounter with raccoon poo while climbing one of the trees," he told the crowd that gathered for the opening, explaining that the experience was used as an opportunity to talk about the different parasites found in the feces.

"We had a lot of fun doing the project and now we can go and enjoy nature here again."

Representing Scouts Canada, New Brunswick Council commissioner Peter Kent congratulated the group for its work and said there were three things that made working on the trail a good Scout project.

"The first is it's outdoors, the second is it's an aspect of community service and the third is that it is environmentally friendly," he said.

"It's looking at protecting the environment. A great project. A great Scouting project. Well done."

Mayor Brad Woodside, who was on hand to cut the ribbon for the reopening, agreed.

"I couldn't think of a better project for young people to be involved in," he said. "It involves the environment and it fits in very nicely with what the city is doing with trails, which just happened to be the most popular thing for the people of Fredericton. It's a wonderful project. They've done a great job.

"They've not only done something and completed it; this will give them the opportunity to still be involved in it and maintain it."

But maintaining the trail isn't the troop's only goal. McDonald said because the group enjoyed working on the project, he's hoping it'll want to expand its work on the trail system.

"It's been busy, but it's been really good," he said.

"I'm hoping over the next four or five years that as our troop grows, we'll continue. I think it would be a great activity for the troop."

Grand Reopening of the Corbett Brook Trail

During the month of June, 5th Fredericton Scouts, Venturers, Rovers, and their parents re-cut part of the Corbett Brook Trail in the Vanier Industrial Park. It was last cut by the Fredericton Area Watersheds Association (FAWA) in 2004 and had become overgrown. The Troop trimmed, sawed and chopped brush to revitalize this beautiful path. They also pulled out lots of trash and explored the area. The Scouts wrote interpretive signs for topics that interest them, thanks to inspiration drawn from an educational visit to the trail with Jim Goltz. The environmentally friendly cedar signs were installed by the youth on the 450-metre trail. Some of their chosen topics: Habitats, Edible plants, Erosion, and Raccoon Feces (in the context of parasites!).

The 5th Fredericton Scouts thank Loblaw for a $2500 “Environmental Scout Initiatives” grant to do this work. We would also like to thank the following organizations for their support: the City of Fredericton, ANBL (this section of trail is on their property), the Fredericton Area Watersheds Association, the Conservation Council of New Brunswick, and the Fredericton Trails Coalition.

The Corbett Brook Trail will provide a long-term impact on the City of Fredericton by contributing to the existing well-used trail system. It also helps raise awareness of local ecology and it provides an educational experience for its patrons. The trail is also a source of relaxation and recreation for local residents, “off the beaten path.” Originally, the Corbett Brook Trail was defined by FAWA to run along the brook from its intersection with the Lincoln Trail up to the UNB Woodlot. This is one section of the trail, which runs adjacent the ANBL headquarters. Over time the Scout Troop wish to continue the trail to the headwaters in the UNB Woodlot near the Corbett Center. Mixed boxes of Vanilla and Chocolate Cookies will be sold door to door around the city from March 28th to April 16th. On sale for $4 per box.

Scouts are selling AVON gift sets for Mothers Day, they are $10 each and can be ordered from the youth parents and leaders.

Last weekend 6 members of the 5th Wolf Cubs took part in the Area Kub Kar Races and acheived an amazing 2nd,3rd and 5th Position out of the 100+ participants taking part.

The Venturers and Scouts took part in the 2011 Orion Winter Challange hosted by the Rover Round Table which includes our very own 5th Rover Crew. They completed all tasks set to them in the Great Escape Themed event and were part of the Winning Team

Linking Campfire

After an amazing Linking Camp this past weekend the Scout Group and Guide Units will be meeting together once again on the 2nd of March for a Traditional Indoor Campfire at the Church.

Since its on the Wednesday at 6.15pm to 7.45pm, all scouting level will NOT be meeting on Tuesday 1st of March.

So bring your campfire blankets, skits, songs, cheers and we will all have a great time around the warm glow of the electric bulbs :)

Baden-Powell / Thinking Day Service

This Sunday there is a Special Service at the church. Once a year Scouts and Guides across the world celebrate our organisations, it takes different names, Thinking Day (Guiding), Baden-Powell Day (Scouting), but for all its a time to remember were part of something Amazing.....

On February 13th (this Sunday) youth (scouting and Guiding) are asked to arrive in the hall at 10:30am where we will form a parade. This is a formal event, so please dress in Full Uniform (For Scout members this includes dark bottoms, dark socks, indoor shoes, sashes and neckers). The service will start at 11am sharp,

Parents are invited to sit in the sanctuary and enjoy this special service, they are also encouraged to attend the reception in the hall after the service for cake, coffee and slideshow.

This is a 5th Fredericton Scouting/Guiding Service put on by the Scouts & Guides, for the Scouts and Guides, and as a Thank you to our sponsor, St. Andrew's Church.
